The MediaTek taskbar tray utility will be launched at startup. It won't matter, because you can't be stopped. You'll get warnings that it isn't the right driver. Scroll down to MediaTek, and choose their USB wifi adapter. Browse to the the directory:Ĭ:\ProgramData\Mediatek Driver\RT2870 Wireless LAN Card\Driver Right-click on the AE1000 (which will have a yellow alert icon on it,) and choose "Update driver software." Tell it you want to find the driver on your PC. With the AE1000 plugged into a USB port, launch the Device Manager. Launch the MediaTek driver installer - IS_Setup_ICS_011916_1.5.39.173.exe - and let it install. You'll then boot to a menu with "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" - hit that and reboot one last time. Click on "Troubleshoot", then on "Advanced options", and then on "Startup Settings". I find it easiest to go to a command prompt and enter shutdown /r /o.

You'll need to disable Windows 8's DRIVER SIGNATURE ENFORCEMENT to install the "incorrect" driver for the AE1000. Download the USB Wireless driver from MediaTek's support site.

MediaTek still makes RT2870-based wifi adapters, and they continue to update their drivers. The Linksys AE1000 uses the RALink RT2870 chipset. Maybe someone can generalize to get similar stuff working. Yeah, this is an oddball issue, but I'm so chuffed at finding a working solution that I thought it should be somewhere on reddit.
